About the school
A national university founded in 1949. It has 7,405 students, including 214 international students (undergraduate 27 · graduate 187). There are 812 faculty members, 39 of them from outside Japan.

- Gifu Higher School of Agriculture and Forestry (the origin of today's Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences)
- 1949
- The new-system Gifu University was launched, based on Gifu Higher School of Agriculture and Forestry, the prefectural higher technical school, Gifu Normal School, Gifu Prefectural Medical University and others
- 2004
- Became the national university corporation Gifu University. The Faculty of Medicine and its hospital were relocated and integrated into the Yanagido area, and the Faculty of Agriculture was reorganized as the Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences.

There is no exam at the university; you go through document screening based only on EJU and TOEFL scores. You mail documents in late December to early January, and results are announced on Feb 8. This is a system where you can receive admission before coming to Japan (pre-arrival admission).

Good to know before applying
- For TOEFL iBT, only Test Date scores are valid (MyBest scores are not accepted). For the Faculties of Education, Medicine, Engineering and Applied Biological Sciences, you must apply in advance so that ETS sends an official score report to the university by the last day of the application period; if the contents differ, admission is cancelled even after you pass (2026 guidelines).
- You cannot apply if you fall below the standard scores for the Faculty of Engineering (240 or higher in 2 science subjects + Mathematics; TOEFL 45 or higher), the Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences (EJU total 640 or higher; Japanese 320 or higher; written 40 or higher; TOEFL 71 or higher) and the Faculty of Regional Studies (TOEFL 65 or higher).
- Application documents are accepted by mail only (express simple registered mail). You cannot change the contents after applying, and accepted documents and application fees received are not refunded, in principle (2026 guidelines).
- If you apply as an expected holder without the "Student" residence status, you must switch to "Student" promptly after the enrollment procedure. If you do not obtain it, admission is cancelled (2026 guidelines).

Application form (printed from the online application site), resume, statement of purpose (Faculty of Regional Studies), graduation (expected) certificate and transcript (Japanese translation if in another language), EJU score confirmation sheet (or a copy of the admission ticket), copy of the TOEFL iBT Test Taker Score Report + copy of the official score report request screen (except Faculty of Regional Studies), copy of residence card or passport; for Music and Health and Physical Education in the Faculty of Education, sheet music, a selected-piece form, and a music history form / athletic history form (2026 guidelines)

Student life support
There is the on-campus Kurono Dormitory (private rooms; dormitory fee ¥4,300 + common service fee ¥2,200 + utilities ¥7,000 = about ¥13,500 per month). It is not exclusively for international students; it is for regular undergraduate students, and there are admission criteria such as living 80 km or more from the university (amounts as of January 2023).
