About the school
A public university founded in 2004. It has 6,655 students, including 227 international students (undergraduate 156 · graduate 71). There are 517 faculty members, 20 of them from outside Japan. It has exchange agreements with 48 universities in 21 countries and regions. It has 5 campuses (Kobe Commerce, Himeji Engineering, Harima Science, Himeji Environmental Human, Akashi Nursing); which one you attend depends on your department.

- Hyogo Prefectural Kobe Higher Commercial School opened (the predecessor of Kobe University of Commerce)

- Hyogo Prefectural Higher Technical School opened (the predecessor of Himeji Institute of Technology)

- The three prefectural universities (Kobe University of Commerce, Himeji Institute of Technology and Hyogo College of Nursing Science) merged, and the University of Hyogo opened

Good to know before applying
- (International Business and Economics, Social Information Science) Permanent residents cannot apply. Those who graduated (or are expected to graduate) from a Japanese high school cannot apply. Enrollment in Japanese middle and high schools must total 2 years or less. The "Student" status of residence is required at the time of enrollment procedures.
- Application documents must "arrive" by the deadline (a postmark does not count). For International Business and Economics and Social Information Science, bring them to the counter in principle; only those who live far away may send them by registered express mail.
- (International Business and Economics, Social Information Science) Those who applied by mail must bring and show their actual passport at the Kobe Commerce Campus by 4 p.m. on February 19, 2027.
- If you have missed any of the designated EJU subjects, you are excluded from the selection of successful applicants. The School of Engineering requires both physics and chemistry, in Japanese.
- (School of Human Science and Environment) There is no student dormitory, and the university does not act as a guarantor for rental contracts. Year 1 lectures are mainly at the Himeji Engineering Campus.

April entry: entrance fee ¥282,000 plus annual tuition ¥535,800 (as of April 2026). In addition, miscellaneous fees by school (e.g. ¥139,000 for International Business and Economics). The tuition-free program for prefectural residents is treated differently for international students. September entry Global Business Course: entrance fee ¥141,000 and 50% tuition reduction (screening fee ¥8,500).

Scholarships
- Global Business Course (September entry) international students get a 50% tuition reduction for 4 years. From the second year, the top 30% in the previous year's grades get a full waiver.
- The Himeji City "Overseas Student Scholarship" (¥30,000 per month; for residents of the city, with selection) is announced by the School of Engineering.
Student life support
Year 1 students in the Global Business Course live in the international dormitory "Global House" at the Kobe Commerce Campus (¥30,000 per month, internet etc. included). The School of Human Science and Environment has no student dormitory.
