Nisshin City has a strong character as a bedroom town and college town for Nagoya City and Toyota City, with several universities scattered around the city, including Aichi Gakuin University, Nagoya University of Commerce & Business, Sugiyama Jogakuen University and Nagoya Gakugei University and Nagoya University of Foreign Studies. The city's population was about 91,500 in the 2020 census and has kept growing steadily since; it is a newly developed residential city that has grown greatly through housing development in the Nagoya commuter belt, from a little over 10,000 when it was a town-and-village system in the Showa era.
