Ishikari City was developed as a bedroom town for Sapporo from the late 1960s, and about 80 percent of the population is concentrated in the so-called 'Hanakawa district', which includes Hanakawa, Hanakawa-Higashi, Hanakawa-Kita, Hanakawa-Minami, Hanawa and Tarukawa. It also has the Ishikari Bay New Port, one of Hokkaido's leading logistics and industrial ports, and the industrial park behind it has more than 700 companies and about 20,000 workers, giving it a strong industrial-city character.
