Living in Otaru-Chikko

A port redevelopment area where Wing Bay Otaru, one of the largest shopping malls in Hokkaido, connects directly to the station via Marine Road and the Otaru port marina is right in front of you. Shopping and leisure facilities are excellent, and it is cheaper than central Sapporo. However, the commute to Sapporo is in the 40-minute range, and you cannot reach Odori directly by JR, so you have to continue from Sapporo Station via the underground walkway (Chikaho) or the subway.

With a large shopping mall and a marina nearby, shopping and leisure facilities are good, you can commute to Sapporo by JR, and the terrain is flatter than in central Otaru, which makes daily life easier. However, it is some distance from central Sapporo, and you need to allow for winter snowfall. It suits families and office workers who want convenient shopping, reasonable housing costs and a commute to Sapporo.
