Photo of Sakurai City

A city in southeastern Nara about 50 minutes to central Osaka by express, an area where old shrines and ancient ruins are concentrated. The commute is on the long side, but rents are low and historic scenery is part of your daily surroundings.

A city in southeastern Nara Prefecture, about 50 minutes to Osaka-Uehommachi by Kintetsu Osaka Line express. Omiwa Shrine, counted among Japan's oldest shrines, worships Mt. Miwa itself as its sacred body, and around it spread the Makimuku ruins, a leading candidate site for the 3rd-century Yamataikoku, which ties in with the legend of Himiko. The area is also famous as the birthplace of Miwa somen (Miwa noodles), with a tradition of nearly 1,300 years. However, the urban area is small and there is almost no nightlife, so compared with Osaka it is more than quiet, it is dull, and it suits single-person households and couples who commute and want to live calmly in a small town where history and tradition are alive.
