祇園四条 · Kyoto
The largest entertainment district, with Yasaka Shrine a 5-minute walk away and Hanamikoji and the Gion hanamachi directly connected, embracing Gion Kobu, one of Kyoto's five hanamachi where maiko culture lives on. At night the Kiyamachi and Pontocho dining districts are also within walking distance. Rents are not especially high for downtown Kyoto, but in exchange you have to accept the high prices and limited living infrastructure typical of a tourist area.
This is Kyoto's largest tourist and entertainment district, flanking Gion and the Kamo River, on the Keihan Main Line. The hanamachi famous for maiko, Yasaka Shrine and the Kiyamachi dining district blend together, giving it strong Kyoto charm. It is always crowded with tourists and housing is scarce, which you should keep in mind. Keihan gives good access to Osaka and Kawaramachi is within walking distance, so it suits people who want to enjoy Kyoto's energy and charm.
