Living in Yamashina

A practical residential area set in an eastern basin surrounded by mountains. It is 5 minutes by JR to Kyoto Station and 35 minutes to Osaka Umeda without transfers, and with the subway and Keihan as well it is a transportation hub served by three operators, yet rents are markedly cheaper than in downtown Kyoto. However, it is separated from the city center by mountains, so there is a secluded feel, with places like Shijo-Kawaramachi taking more than 20 minutes to reach.

This is a practical residential area in the eastern basin, where the JR Biwako Line meets the subway Tozai Line and Keihan. Surrounded by mountains it is calm, and three lines give good access to downtown Kyoto, Osaka and Lake Biwa, and low rents make it a good-value residential area. It is separated from downtown Kyoto by mountains and feels somewhat secluded, which you should keep in mind. It suits families and office workers who want both low housing costs and transit in every direction.
